I've had a garden wherever I lived whenever I could. When we bought our house a couple years ago it was a forgone conclusion that I would be trying to put some kind of garden together. I'm a food grower. No flowers for me. Not that there's anything wrong with that at all. My neighbor has a beautiful yard full of all sorts of flowers and flower beds. But for me I'd rather produce something I can use. It's the utilitarian in me. We moved into our house in the mid December in 2010, so when the snow was finally gone I started working on a couple raised beds. I really wanted to make them cheap and from recycled stuff, but mainly cheap. So I started by building my first raised bed out of used pallets. It didn't turn out too bad, but it is kinda ugly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-y8qEvHzE7i8/UML9ZWn0IwI/AAAAAAAAJSA/rnuUnsAFZiw/s1600/WP_000278.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-y8qEvHzE7i8/UML9ZWn0IwI/AAAAAAAAJSA/rnuUnsAFZiw/s640/WP_000278.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I put a pea fence in the middle and have a nice growing area on either side.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then while looking on the craiglist free stuff page I came across what I would be building lots of stuff with...window crating. One of the Safelite stores in town usually gets a big shipment twice a year and they have tons of this stuff. It's also great because it's only stapled together so getting the boards apart without destroying them is pretty easy and then it's just taking the time to remove all the staples. But you end up with a nice piece of 1 x 4 pine in varying lengths. </div>

There's a couple reason I built the beds so high. One was to keep my dog out of them, second it was easier on the back to weed, and third I had bought a large load of top soil and needed to put it somewhere. But they also give me great root depth for my carrots<br />

It happens that I get asked a lot of question pertaining to various repair and building topics by my friends. I think it kind of funny because most of my knowledge comes from trial and error and Youtube. But that being said I was having a discussion with a friend about tools and what would be some good ones to have handy. Over the years I've accumulated a nice collection of various tools. Some I use almost daily and others maybe just once a year. That being said I thought I'd put together a series and explored what should be in your tool box.<br />
<br />
I'll cover both hand tools and power tools. Tools can be rather expensive especially if you're trying to buy them all at once. I've worked out a deal with my wife that if I'm working around the farm and need a new tool I can get it, as long as I really need it. Levels of really need it vary, but the truth is a good tool collection should be put together slowly and if that's on a buy when needed basis so be it. But I do believe there are 3 tools that should be in every home owners tool box. How much you want to spend on those 3 tools can range from very affordable to very high end, but in the end that's up to you.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1. Cordless Drill/Driver</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8r8a37olJ-0/V3bROwjgDSI/AAAAAAAAfWs/zaMT3C8Ij188s7XaDNU99t9zZOrZ7NwjwCLcB/s1600/61trmz9N3xL._SL1135_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="386" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8r8a37olJ-0/V3bROwjgDSI/AAAAAAAAfWs/zaMT3C8Ij188s7XaDNU99t9zZOrZ7NwjwCLcB/s640/61trmz9N3xL._SL1135_.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I believe you should have at least one decent corded drill/driver as well, but as far as cordless tools go this is must. This is probably the most used tool I own without a doubt. It's just so handy with a wide variety of bits for making holes and driving fasteners. There are hundreds of cordless drills to choose from and at all price points. I will tell you my choice is the Hitachi above, but before you choose a drill there are a couple things to consider even beyond what type of battery to get. Do you plan on purchasing other cordless tools? I would pick a brand, battery, and voltage that has lots of different tools that can use the same battery type. What brand that is, is up to you, but I would do some homework. Maybe take a trip down to the hardware store and test drive a couple models. I used to have a very nice DeWalt 18v NiCa Drill/Driver. But after many years both of my batteries died and I was a crossroads. Do I just buy a couple new batteries for my drill? Or do I upgrade to lithium ion? Do I stick with DeWalt? Since I hadn't invested in any other DeWalt cordless tools this let me kind of get out cheap. I had gotten my money's worth from my old drill and was super happy with both the performance and durability, but I figure I'd shop around. After doing my homework I settled on the Hitachi above. I would have loved to bought American, but there isn't a power tool company that makes its cordless tools in the US anymore. I read a lot of reviews and Hitachi came out highly recommended, plus addition tools aren't that expensive. And while I haven't used my new drill to build a house or anything extreme, I'm still very happy with it's performance. But this was my choice and I'm sure DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, etc. would also be fine. Like I said do your own homework and decided, it's your money.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">2. Circular Saw</span><br />
My last two tools are both saws. I do believe if you are going to be doing any serious work there are a couple other saws (table saw and compound miter/chop saw) you should invest in, but the next two saws are ones you should definitely have. First up is the circular saw. A lot of times you'll hear this saw referred to as a Skilsaw, which I'm sure the Skil's parent company Bosch loves. But in the end the Skilsaw is a circular saw, but not all, oh you get the idea. There are two types of circular saws and it all has to do with motor placement. The sidewinder style has the motor on the side of the tool and produces more RPMs (revolutions per minute)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tHUwK_fcb64/V3bVLKWLy4I/AAAAAAAAfW4/e6qHH1I1bzYW54JbVOQdr8Fgt64JaY71QCLcB/s1600/61rc5JBQA7L._SL1500_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="372" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tHUwK_fcb64/V3bVLKWLy4I/AAAAAAAAfW4/e6qHH1I1bzYW54JbVOQdr8Fgt64JaY71QCLcB/s640/61rc5JBQA7L._SL1500_.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The other type is the Worm Drive and has the motor placed on the back end of the tool and produces more torque.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-67xHUMSudZU/V3bVLHrjwbI/AAAAAAAAfW8/BOI8uqhu6aAEtiFf2JXXPQ1IZp11enSwgCLcB/s1600/71qdst0HpuL._SL1500_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-67xHUMSudZU/V3bVLHrjwbI/AAAAAAAAfW8/BOI8uqhu6aAEtiFf2JXXPQ1IZp11enSwgCLcB/s640/71qdst0HpuL._SL1500_.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Some people like one style over the other, but in terms of price the sidewinders are much cheaper. You can also find cordless circular saws and this might be something to consider when looking at a cordless drill, but I feel you really should have a corded model to do some serious ripping and cutting. What model you choose is up to you. Price range from about $30 to the hundred of dollars. Oddly enough I have a fairly cheap Skilsaw in my toolbox that I've had for almost 20 years and I'm pretty happy with it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">3. Jigsaw</span><br />
And finally we get to the Jigsaw. The circular saw is great for big quick cuts, but the jigsaw is great for everything the circular saw is not. It's great for cleaning up corners when making right angle cuts, cutting larger awkward openings, and cutting weird angles. You get the idea. And again like all tools prices range from very affordable to master craftsman deluxe edition with cup holder. And many tool manufactures also make cordless versions. I have a fairly affordable Black and Decker jigsaw. It's super basic and there were many times I've been tempted to upgrade to a nicer model, but it's been a great workhorse and for what I tend to use it for it works great.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zaPkuDqryNA/V3bZ6u_JztI/AAAAAAAAfXI/N8DtkWpYGW421kUaXJHECmi-ITQbsHPtQCLcB/s1600/41F5cPY5MpL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="580" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zaPkuDqryNA/V3bZ6u_JztI/AAAAAAAAfXI/N8DtkWpYGW421kUaXJHECmi-ITQbsHPtQCLcB/s640/41F5cPY5MpL.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DL4Sdzjc2Fs/V3bZ6gxLG5I/AAAAAAAAfXM/Kio7ppth0SEbkmzq8ROmi4mMtEoJMG9tQCLcB/s1600/61YOsfzvZgL._SL1000_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DL4Sdzjc2Fs/V3bZ6gxLG5I/AAAAAAAAfXM/Kio7ppth0SEbkmzq8ROmi4mMtEoJMG9tQCLcB/s640/61YOsfzvZgL._SL1000_.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Well there you go. My thoughts on the 3 power tools every homeowner should have, heck even if you don't own a home they are 3 great tools to have and shouldn't break the bank. I've provided images of the different types of tools to illustrate my points and I'm not endorsing any one brand. People can be fiercely loyal to a tool brand and that's fine with me, use whatever brand you like.<br />

Life if humming along here at the farm. Seems I've been busy every weekend since early April working on the house getting it ready to sell. Yep we'll be establishing a new city farm somewhere hopefully a little larger by next spring. But that doesn't mean I didn't plant and don't expect to reap what I've sown this summer and fall.<br />
<br />
First thing I did this spring was paint the greenhouse. It's something I've been meaning to do for awhile now.<br />

Now it matches the house and shed very nicely. I also painted the whole house and ended up with about 2 gallons of the white left so I'll probably put a new coat on the shed and addons.<br />
<br />
I also pruned back my raspberry bramble. Over the years I've been slowly training my canes. Last year I also did a big pruning on my 2 year old canes and had a bumper crop and it looks like this year will be the same.<br />

The only other thing in the green house besides long beans are my cucumbers, which aren't very tall, but are starting to put off a lot of flowers.cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9160393366045097105.post-64493997741826665942016-02-12T10:21:00.000-08:002016-02-12T10:21:29.207-08:00Final Touches - A small tile job<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last year, we replaced the cabinets and countertops of the old farm house. There was originally a tile backsplash under the pass through from the kitchen to the living room, but when we took out the old countertop that tile was in the way of the new countertops so we removed it, which meant removing the drywall underneath as well. The house needs a bunch of final touches still. I need to finish trim and transitions, but I'm waiting for a little warmer weather. We did decided that instead of looking at it as a whole we just break it all down to little jobs and try and tackle one a weekend. So last MLK Jr. Day we headed down to the home center and looked at tiles. It just happened that the space we needed to cover was 3 inches tall and about 5 feet long. We opted for some nice white subway tiles. They were cheap, the right thickness, height, and adjusting my grout gap the perfect length so I didn't need to cut any. That was a big bonus.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GD_rLRyhUaY/Vr4fqD8A6PI/AAAAAAAAeeE/0fNooqcAfTE/s1600/IMG_3708%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="380" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GD_rLRyhUaY/Vr4fqD8A6PI/AAAAAAAAeeE/0fNooqcAfTE/s640/IMG_3708%255B1%255D.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

I opted for using a sanded colored caulk for grout. The counter won't see wet work and the tile really is just for show. <br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WYdblQVCIJc/VbJz3enY-RI/AAAAAAAAaOc/SyS6YJsKwLY/s1600/IMG_2308.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WYdblQVCIJc/VbJz3enY-RI/AAAAAAAAaOc/SyS6YJsKwLY/s640/IMG_2308.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Things have been going great on the farm. My squash and zucchinis have been producing so much I've made some friends very happy. We've already put away a couple pounds of green beans and I have two huge bags of peas that need to be shucked. The greens bed is still putting out more than we can eat and who knows maybe we'll get a few cucumbers here this month. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The raspberry bramble is also finally starting to mature. This is a picture of the first ripe raspberry. I ate it, I did not share and it was delicious. The bramble looks like it's going to put out gallons this year. I had some great looking 1st year canes last year and they didn't disappoint this year. I also loaded up the bramble with all the compost I'd been cooking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That's it from the farm, I'll have a full update this weekend.</div>

Still a week or two away from harvesting raspberries, but there will be gallons judging from how many flowers we've had. The bees have been hard at work on the bramble.<br />

Christa planted some flowers on the lower part of the front beds when none of the cabbage survived, but the upper level has some nice healthy cabbage.<br />
<br />
Should be harvesting peas soon, and I've started taking a few long beans. Raspberries and squash should be ready soon and I think I'm going to have to replant my lettuce as most of it has bolted already with the long warm sunny days. cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9160393366045097105.post-83378435777262911622015-06-09T16:53:00.003-07:002015-06-09T16:53:51.264-07:00Into June Farm update<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I can't believe we're not out of May and it's already hit the 70's. Not only that but things are really starting to green up.</div>

You can see I've added cat excluder devices to most of my beds. I love my cats, but they like to dig and poop.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's been awhile. But then not much has been happening on the farm. We had a fairly mild winter by Alaska standards and so far we've had a very warm, dry spring. It's still getting too cold at night to plant outside, but I've already got my peas in and up and starting to harden off our starts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've also cleaned up the greenhouse and readied all my pots, I've amended all my beds, and I think I'm just waiting for the night time temps to stay above 50 or so.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This also means clearing out the freezer, by smoking up the rest of last years fish and working my way through the rest of the put up veggies. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stay tuned for more fun.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ePxgUc-MRyI/VE6fdOX3HvI/AAAAAAAAVNk/gaY_n_1aHh4/s1600/IMG_0026.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ePxgUc-MRyI/VE6fdOX3HvI/AAAAAAAAVNk/gaY_n_1aHh4/s1600/IMG_0026.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Had a nice haul on the potatoes and carrots.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pSAXJy-rfns/VE6fdPOIgAI/AAAAAAAAVNg/N8utG2jBaWM/s1600/IMG_0025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pSAXJy-rfns/VE6fdPOIgAI/AAAAAAAAVNg/N8utG2jBaWM/s1600/IMG_0025.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Bought a dehydrator and of course had to start playing with it right away.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vpawNNIzwDs/VE6fc5kjz5I/AAAAAAAAVNc/G29Mx6sur7o/s1600/IMG_0030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vpawNNIzwDs/VE6fc5kjz5I/AAAAAAAAVNc/G29Mx6sur7o/s1600/IMG_0030.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
But it was also time to start working on the floors and eventually the kitchen. The wee pup is almost ready to crawl and we wanted to get rid of our nasty carpet and put in a nice wood floor.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h3UtRssL58k/VE6feDEfoUI/AAAAAAAAVNw/-_4_jwsbSgo/s1600/IMG_0133.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h3UtRssL58k/VE6feDEfoUI/AAAAAAAAVNw/-_4_jwsbSgo/s1600/IMG_0133.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
The one thing I'll say about my house is that when ever I think I've seen it all I find something new to shake my head at. I think these tiles were put here to help level the floor for the carpet. This corner is where the previous owners had a wood stove.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3Oybiwy1lK8/VE6feQ8l3GI/AAAAAAAAVPA/nNk6YHkIDEQ/s1600/IMG_0135.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3Oybiwy1lK8/VE6feQ8l3GI/AAAAAAAAVPA/nNk6YHkIDEQ/s1600/IMG_0135.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
Luckily most of the living room was fairly level.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lOV_xt45Z9U/VE6felQ4eII/AAAAAAAAVN0/8alejyEdnJ4/s1600/IMG_0136.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lOV_xt45Z9U/VE6felQ4eII/AAAAAAAAVN0/8alejyEdnJ4/s1600/IMG_0136.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pqH5fNS2Yis/VE6ffXmExEI/AAAAAAAAVN8/8z2mv-lfhXA/s1600/IMG_0163.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pqH5fNS2Yis/VE6ffXmExEI/AAAAAAAAVN8/8z2mv-lfhXA/s1600/IMG_0163.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--8nDZF8AmnU/VE6fgI56j6I/AAAAAAAAVOI/8wg3_qOrZVw/s1600/IMG_0164.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--8nDZF8AmnU/VE6fgI56j6I/AAAAAAAAVOI/8wg3_qOrZVw/s1600/IMG_0164.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
However once I got to the hallway I found more surprises. I forgot to take a before picture, but they had dug up the waterline or gasline, something and there was a big elevation difference so I decided to do a self leveler in the area.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-InYIWcF0gEg/VE6fgZBa5_I/AAAAAAAAVOM/TSgoX6jZZiM/s1600/IMG_0176.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-InYIWcF0gEg/VE6fgZBa5_I/AAAAAAAAVOM/TSgoX6jZZiM/s1600/IMG_0176.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x70BD1ro-60/VE6fhOfyGXI/AAAAAAAAVOU/vrJPAIRrkA4/s1600/IMG_0180.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x70BD1ro-60/VE6fhOfyGXI/AAAAAAAAVOU/vrJPAIRrkA4/s1600/IMG_0180.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-POymkNN5SJ4/VE6fho3IpzI/AAAAAAAAVOc/rlVFGzYrZTA/s1600/IMG_0187.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-POymkNN5SJ4/VE6fho3IpzI/AAAAAAAAVOc/rlVFGzYrZTA/s1600/IMG_0187.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Over all it turned out great and made for a great surface to lay the flooring on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xWlLsCY0BX8/VE6fiWZzRnI/AAAAAAAAVOo/FJ4ZBKTtcwo/s1600/IMG_0189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xWlLsCY0BX8/VE6fiWZzRnI/AAAAAAAAVOo/FJ4ZBKTtcwo/s1600/IMG_0189.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mI5SsMqw82A/VE6fi5T-T_I/AAAAAAAAVOs/ycIyRvw4UkE/s1600/IMG_0205.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mI5SsMqw82A/VE6fi5T-T_I/AAAAAAAAVOs/ycIyRvw4UkE/s1600/IMG_0205.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Still have to floor the babies room and in a couple weeks tear out the kitchen for new floor and cabinets as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We routinely take well over 5 gallons of berries off a year and probably way more than that. We already made a huge batch of jam with last years leftovers and some of this years crop.<br />
<br />
I thought it would be fun to show the progression of the summer all over the farm and lets start with our raspberries.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-whTDN7nHZtE/VAjZfxJa00I/AAAAAAAAUVM/nIE-Qmp_HLU/s1600/IMG_2446.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-whTDN7nHZtE/VAjZfxJa00I/AAAAAAAAUVM/nIE-Qmp_HLU/s1600/IMG_2446.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Early June. We had just got back from our whirlwind family visit in the lower 48 and I started to go to work on the yard. One of the first things I did was put up some fencing to help rein in our bramble. I also did quite a bit of pruning and next year I'm not only going to do a good prune, but I have a bin of compost ready to fertilize these guys.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_T2U3_CihF0/VAjZes4_nII/AAAAAAAAUVI/-eZ70HXiNSY/s1600/IMG_2512.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_T2U3_CihF0/VAjZes4_nII/AAAAAAAAUVI/-eZ70HXiNSY/s1600/IMG_2512.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
By late June the Bramble is in full swing and made the bees very happy with all it's flowers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tlxi9Kj3gDA/VAjZevN5G1I/AAAAAAAAUVc/EKlZH0iEdgk/s1600/IMG_2534.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tlxi9Kj3gDA/VAjZevN5G1I/AAAAAAAAUVc/EKlZH0iEdgk/s1600/IMG_2534.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
By mid July new canes are starting to pop up and we are already harvesting fruit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kWoW05Z1dV4/VAjZfbYFBMI/AAAAAAAAUVQ/qxJQ925ZVis/s1600/IMG_2587.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kWoW05Z1dV4/VAjZfbYFBMI/AAAAAAAAUVQ/qxJQ925ZVis/s1600/IMG_2587.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
By mid August the new canes have come up and the bramble is getting really bushy. Those canes should be big producers next year.<br />

Here we are at the end of August and the weather is starting to turn cooler at night. The fruit producing cane's leaves are starting to turn. Still quite a few berries left in the bramble I just hope we have a little while longer to harvest.cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9160393366045097105.post-83005975869266072362014-09-01T15:57:00.001-07:002014-09-01T15:57:44.868-07:008-30-14 Farm Update<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
End of the month update. We just did a big rhubarb harvest. Starting to get a little colder at night and looks like our season is rapidly approaching</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wASmGj7tYLo/VATyZjy0WPI/AAAAAAAAUM4/CGjAzTYEhHc/s1600/IMG_2631.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wASmGj7tYLo/VATyZjy0WPI/AAAAAAAAUM4/CGjAzTYEhHc/s1600/IMG_2631.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The raspberries have been productive again this year and the new canes look really healthy. Should mean another great year next year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oiRfeBoZlQk/VATygw2DxQI/AAAAAAAAUNA/ajsuU73H6jE/s1600/IMG_2632.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oiRfeBoZlQk/VATygw2DxQI/AAAAAAAAUNA/ajsuU73H6jE/s1600/IMG_2632.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Even with the late start the taters are looking good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i3Cj0xj9HHM/VATylBmHGPI/AAAAAAAAUNI/Ys_L9lEsmk4/s1600/IMG_2633.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i3Cj0xj9HHM/VATylBmHGPI/AAAAAAAAUNI/Ys_L9lEsmk4/s1600/IMG_2633.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
We've had a great supply of lettuce all summer and the beats are almost ready.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a4KMgeiIsys/VATy9PFmY5I/AAAAAAAAUNQ/Kzsx51YGX5Y/s1600/IMG_2634.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a4KMgeiIsys/VATy9PFmY5I/AAAAAAAAUNQ/Kzsx51YGX5Y/s1600/IMG_2634.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Even with only one pea fence we've gotten a great crop and the carrot tops are the largest I've ever seen in the garden.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-csYFlLzrzfc/VATy_N3-DvI/AAAAAAAAUNY/q1w_idZUkWg/s1600/IMG_2635.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-csYFlLzrzfc/VATy_N3-DvI/AAAAAAAAUNY/q1w_idZUkWg/s1600/IMG_2635.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
This yellow wax chili pepper plant has done alright in the green house and the scotch bonnet is also doing pretty good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2MykUUlz7Z4/VATzDDIdvaI/AAAAAAAAUNg/AQCWMYZO3Yg/s1600/IMG_2636.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2MykUUlz7Z4/VATzDDIdvaI/AAAAAAAAUNg/AQCWMYZO3Yg/s1600/IMG_2636.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Really sunny the morning I took these but the green beans have been producing like mad. I've probably put away over 5 pounds in the freezer and we are still regularly eating them with dinner.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XByyKPhosNo/VATzikB2f4I/AAAAAAAAUNw/Mu7DRJz8ll8/s1600/IMG_2637.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XByyKPhosNo/VATzikB2f4I/AAAAAAAAUNw/Mu7DRJz8ll8/s1600/IMG_2637.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Our three cherry tomatoes are doing good to and those tiny little tomatoes are oh so sweet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DyjUdP8NsUc/VATzdb5jfyI/AAAAAAAAUNo/x_dLeZLtA1M/s1600/IMG_2638.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DyjUdP8NsUc/VATzdb5jfyI/AAAAAAAAUNo/x_dLeZLtA1M/s1600/IMG_2638.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
We're also finally getting a nice crop of cucumbers. The variety this year is the Boston Pickling Cuchs and are very tasty, just not very big. Should have enough to make a few batches of pickles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K2B4-ZcKNzY/VATzlVxzdFI/AAAAAAAAUN4/zwFlmx6elkk/s1600/IMG_2639.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K2B4-ZcKNzY/VATzlVxzdFI/AAAAAAAAUN4/zwFlmx6elkk/s1600/IMG_2639.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The yellow and green zuchs are also doing well as is some of our front yard cabbage<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Od8HsLa0UQ8/VATz0CkCe1I/AAAAAAAAUOI/UNmOptC16jc/s1600/IMG_2640.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Od8HsLa0UQ8/VATz0CkCe1I/AAAAAAAAUOI/UNmOptC16jc/s1600/IMG_2640.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
A couple nice yellow Zuchs<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TIw14hwgpSA/VATz2eMITPI/AAAAAAAAUOQ/xGivtPpO8Zc/s1600/IMG_2641.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TIw14hwgpSA/VATz2eMITPI/AAAAAAAAUOQ/xGivtPpO8Zc/s1600/IMG_2641.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
And a few nice green ones.<br />
<br />
Well that's it for now.cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9160393366045097105.post-74614035157017429112014-08-12T17:05:00.001-07:002014-08-12T17:05:49.041-07:00August 12th Farm Update<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Been awhile since I had a good post of the farm. So lets take a walk around.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Looking in the greenhouse it's become quite a jungle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lhagjhhrkvM/U-ql9hS0W9I/AAAAAAAAS0o/2TUnes9wZys/s1600/IMG_2577.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lhagjhhrkvM/U-ql9hS0W9I/AAAAAAAAS0o/2TUnes9wZys/s1600/IMG_2577.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Green beans are going really well. I've already packed away a few pounds and had many, many with dinners.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-leTkxso3WGs/U-qmMd_45kI/AAAAAAAAS04/FYqtBtUczJY/s1600/IMG_2579.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-leTkxso3WGs/U-qmMd_45kI/AAAAAAAAS04/FYqtBtUczJY/s1600/IMG_2579.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The tomatoes have once again topped out in the green house. We have lots of flowers and tons of small tomatoes, but we'll have to see if any ripen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vk1JiJamcs8/U-qmi9Zy2uI/AAAAAAAAS1A/VCsaBMMmlxk/s1600/IMG_2580.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vk1JiJamcs8/U-qmi9Zy2uI/AAAAAAAAS1A/VCsaBMMmlxk/s1600/IMG_2580.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The cucumbers have taken over their corner as well and we've been pretty diligent on pollinating. We finally have a couple that have set.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y6e5v7JdVsw/U-qmmX7olkI/AAAAAAAAS1I/MDNxHFtd2iM/s1600/IMG_2581.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y6e5v7JdVsw/U-qmmX7olkI/AAAAAAAAS1I/MDNxHFtd2iM/s1600/IMG_2581.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Got a couple pepper plants starts from a friend, I'm not sure what kind they are only I was told they are hot. And we've already got a couple.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ZejwPo2pEU/U-qmEsmTCTI/AAAAAAAAS0w/LijaiPrthRs/s1600/IMG_2578.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ZejwPo2pEU/U-qmEsmTCTI/AAAAAAAAS0w/LijaiPrthRs/s1600/IMG_2578.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Out in the beds everything is growing good. The lettuce continues to be harvested, the beats are coming along nicely and this is our 3rd or 4th round of radishes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kcKOhV7hXu0/U-qmyUbjLqI/AAAAAAAAS1Q/2kdNTCFnbto/s1600/IMG_2582.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kcKOhV7hXu0/U-qmyUbjLqI/AAAAAAAAS1Q/2kdNTCFnbto/s1600/IMG_2582.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
You can also congratulate Jon here. He was recently promoted to General. General shithead and has taken that corner of the box as his own.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m5YTFH8mvsk/U-qnPPQXw1I/AAAAAAAAS1g/cu2jfzWmX_w/s1600/IMG_2583.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m5YTFH8mvsk/U-qnPPQXw1I/AAAAAAAAS1g/cu2jfzWmX_w/s1600/IMG_2583.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The peas and carrots are both doing great. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JL81f7qP21g/U-qnCepIGJI/AAAAAAAAS1Y/LvQSn-p7BjY/s1600/IMG_2584.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JL81f7qP21g/U-qnCepIGJI/AAAAAAAAS1Y/LvQSn-p7BjY/s1600/IMG_2584.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
The peas have already topped their fence once again and even with only one pea fence this year I think we'll have plenty.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QxM944fieMk/U-qnZhLYDbI/AAAAAAAAS1o/-df-OBnpK8M/s1600/IMG_2585.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QxM944fieMk/U-qnZhLYDbI/AAAAAAAAS1o/-df-OBnpK8M/s1600/IMG_2585.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Taters are blooming which is always a good sign.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2qVsbmjHh5s/U-qnstlU_BI/AAAAAAAAS1w/Eow8c5CmQfg/s1600/IMG_2586.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2qVsbmjHh5s/U-qnstlU_BI/AAAAAAAAS1w/Eow8c5CmQfg/s1600/IMG_2586.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The bramble has really bushed up. We've taken a couple gallons off of it already and there are tons and tons more to come.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fIbsNhhzFKA/U-qn2AHlq3I/AAAAAAAAS14/A_KfDnIrrV0/s1600/IMG_2587.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fIbsNhhzFKA/U-qn2AHlq3I/AAAAAAAAS14/A_KfDnIrrV0/s1600/IMG_2587.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5Jgwf7wskSQ/U-qoAgeGFqI/AAAAAAAAS2A/dUt-NXoavSo/s1600/IMG_2588.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5Jgwf7wskSQ/U-qoAgeGFqI/AAAAAAAAS2A/dUt-NXoavSo/s1600/IMG_2588.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
All the zucchini and squash plants are doing well and producing lots of fruit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6vSInJJpFfY/U-qoSGpMC-I/AAAAAAAAS2Q/--mXfrZIUIA/s1600/IMG_2589.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6vSInJJpFfY/U-qoSGpMC-I/AAAAAAAAS2Q/--mXfrZIUIA/s1600/IMG_2589.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oKeFJlsUHB8/U-qoQXeEV1I/AAAAAAAAS2I/jNNkglCuY4Q/s1600/IMG_2590.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oKeFJlsUHB8/U-qoQXeEV1I/AAAAAAAAS2I/jNNkglCuY4Q/s1600/IMG_2590.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
We even had a few cabbage take and survive out front.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J-rjSXxogWo/U-qoxAfNZdI/AAAAAAAAS2Y/TiYUgYkKLIM/s1600/IMG_2591.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J-rjSXxogWo/U-qoxAfNZdI/AAAAAAAAS2Y/TiYUgYkKLIM/s1600/IMG_2591.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
There's a nice zuch there. We've taken a lot of the smaller fruit that didn't set and have been eating them pretty constantly. Should be another good year all around for these guys.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8_-1wSEMs78/U-qoyyF4YwI/AAAAAAAAS2o/1s53Z_XSt28/s1600/IMG_2592.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8_-1wSEMs78/U-qoyyF4YwI/AAAAAAAAS2o/1s53Z_XSt28/s1600/IMG_2592.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>

Temperatures here in Anchorage have remained about normal if not a little on the cool side and we've had a nice mix of sun and rain, so even though we got a late start a lot of our stuff is going strong.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EHDy7gdQVvU/U8Nq6IvOOeI/AAAAAAAASks/MXlBSXV4TWk/s1600/IMG_2531.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EHDy7gdQVvU/U8Nq6IvOOeI/AAAAAAAASks/MXlBSXV4TWk/s1600/IMG_2531.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The peas are flowering, the carrots are already pretty tall and need a little thinning.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U_IZ6bHR1Qw/U8NrD0Iz8bI/AAAAAAAASk8/jkcwrS_QwxU/s1600/IMG_2532.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U_IZ6bHR1Qw/U8NrD0Iz8bI/AAAAAAAASk8/jkcwrS_QwxU/s1600/IMG_2532.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The lettuce and spinach have been enjoyed for weeks now and we area already on our 2 and third plantings on the French breakfast radishes. And the beets are coming along nicely.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SkMRIaaNMlM/U8Nq-qQ6tsI/AAAAAAAASk0/G19qAqUZ2WM/s1600/IMG_2533.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SkMRIaaNMlM/U8Nq-qQ6tsI/AAAAAAAASk0/G19qAqUZ2WM/s1600/IMG_2533.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Taters are getting bushy.<br />

As are the raspberries, lots of flowers and happy bees on those bushes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5jfvGlUaiN0/U8NrlK3yvbI/AAAAAAAASlU/u30DfNyxPIo/s1600/IMG_2535.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5jfvGlUaiN0/U8NrlK3yvbI/AAAAAAAASlU/u30DfNyxPIo/s1600/IMG_2535.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
In the green house the long beans are putting out a lot of flowers and I'm hoping the next time I post I can report our first crop of beans.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nTXwgvnB234/U8NrjwPjjEI/AAAAAAAASlM/58wyxqiKMEg/s1600/IMG_2536.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nTXwgvnB234/U8NrjwPjjEI/AAAAAAAASlM/58wyxqiKMEg/s1600/IMG_2536.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Cuchs are starting to climb and I've seen the start of a few flowers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kkCicikOzDw/U8Nr83252YI/AAAAAAAASlc/FWlV0Q7twYc/s1600/IMG_2537.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kkCicikOzDw/U8Nr83252YI/AAAAAAAASlc/FWlV0Q7twYc/s1600/IMG_2537.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
The tomatoes we got as starts have reached the top of the greenhouse roof.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tyRdRWYETG8/U8NsCvgjbzI/AAAAAAAASlk/eSQT3csVbq8/s1600/IMG_2538.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tyRdRWYETG8/U8NsCvgjbzI/AAAAAAAASlk/eSQT3csVbq8/s1600/IMG_2538.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
And we've had a few cabbage actually make it and the squash and zuchs are starting to put out a few flowers.<br />

Here we are at the end of June. Things are popping and growing like crazy. We are already harvesting the first round of French breakfast radishes, lettuce, and spinach. I'm hoping in the next few weeks we'll also have some green beans and maybe a few raspberries.<br />

And we have a few of the cabbages up as well, if I could just keep the cats out of the beds.cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9160393366045097105.post-86953650897738155812014-06-29T14:09:00.001-07:002014-06-29T14:09:18.024-07:00Early June<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Start of the season. We got a late start doing the whirlwind tour of the lower 48 introducing our son to the rest of the family. But as soon as we got back we starting working on this years crop. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I finally lined all my potato boxes with plastic to keep the boards from rotting. For some it was already to late.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--NkUcEDP96k/U7B9rB1kq6I/AAAAAAAASWg/2ij-R4SQT2E/s1600/IMG_2443.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--NkUcEDP96k/U7B9rB1kq6I/AAAAAAAASWg/2ij-R4SQT2E/s1600/IMG_2443.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-noHXRVvqmaI/U7B9ikUoF0I/AAAAAAAASWY/aRo5DN5MKwc/s1600/IMG_2444.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-noHXRVvqmaI/U7B9ikUoF0I/AAAAAAAASWY/aRo5DN5MKwc/s1600/IMG_2444.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
We ended up taking out one of the raised beds to move the chickens and their coop to their own part of the yard. We have peas and carrots in the far bed and beats, radishes, spinach and lettuce in the closest one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4jeVUdC3C6Y/U7B9giveRoI/AAAAAAAASWQ/5JyJ9tJrqyA/s1600/IMG_2445.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4jeVUdC3C6Y/U7B9giveRoI/AAAAAAAASWQ/5JyJ9tJrqyA/s1600/IMG_2445.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
In the green house we have 3 varities of long bush beans, a couple tomato plants and pepper plants we got as starts from a friend and cucumbers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7zzb3csTEHA/U7B-QJbFrTI/AAAAAAAASWo/lG7cT1EGlK0/s1600/IMG_2446.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7zzb3csTEHA/U7B-QJbFrTI/AAAAAAAASWo/lG7cT1EGlK0/s1600/IMG_2446.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
I finally put some fencing up in the raspberry bramble to help support the canes and also make it a little easier to pick berries.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uE79-hX9bOM/U7B-VScxI4I/AAAAAAAASWw/0-rsiUAOH6I/s1600/IMG_2447.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uE79-hX9bOM/U7B-VScxI4I/AAAAAAAASWw/0-rsiUAOH6I/s1600/IMG_2447.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Out front we have squash, zucchinni, and cabbage almost all from seed exept a few starts. I hope we have a decent enough summer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TUGi9oZSZt0/U7B-VjQxizI/AAAAAAAASW0/A-x80dqntHE/s1600/IMG_2448.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TUGi9oZSZt0/U7B-VjQxizI/AAAAAAAASW0/A-x80dqntHE/s1600/IMG_2448.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
And the first signs of life in the garden are these radish shouts. Since I'm posting this late, this guys has already been dinner.cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9160393366045097105.post-70874523664333155712014-04-03T13:06:00.000-07:002014-04-03T13:06:49.040-07:00Long December<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Like most Alaskan winters this one has been long, but fortunately the end appears to be near. I'll say this winter wasn't as bad as the last couple years and break up is moving along well, with above freezing temps during the day and then dropping back below freezing at night. This cycle is perfect for break up as it allows the Anchorage drainage system to handle the runoff, but not be overburdened. And when you mix in the 2 weeks of sun, well I think we are all looking forward to Summer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had a new addition to the farm this winter as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6kermM_YkEc/Uz29vqAymzI/AAAAAAAARk0/b5Mwqk7LXqg/s1600/IMG_2257.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6kermM_YkEc/Uz29vqAymzI/AAAAAAAARk0/b5Mwqk7LXqg/s1600/IMG_2257.JPG" height="640" width="566" /></a></div>
<br />
Probably be a few years before he can help out, but I have to say I like being a dad. <br />
<br />
All the chickens made it thought the winter just fine and while egg production dropped way off we still managed to have just enough for us, but I know my friends are looking forward to when we are getting 2 and a half dozen eggs a week again. cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9160393366045097105.post-72629907185302065512013-10-02T16:16:00.001-07:002013-10-02T16:24:22.240-07:00The best smoked salmon you've ever tasted.I teased last post with my load of smoked salmon. I'd figure I'd share my secret recipe and technique. <br />
In Alaska everyone has their own smoked salmon recipe and technique. Some like a wet brine, some like a dry brine, some like it salty, some don't, ect, ect, ect. <br />
<br />
Well here on the farm I've simplified my technique down to the bare essentials. I prefer to do a dry cure on my salmon. I use a 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/4 cup of white sugar, and a 1/4 of salt for my cure and you can enlarge that ratio to as much as you need. I mix everything in a big bowl and then whisk it together to thoroughly mix all the ingredients. Then I lay my salmon out in Pyrex dishes or whatever high walled tray I can find. I then pile my cure on top and the sides. Then cover and put in the fridge. I usually let my salmon cure between 12 and 24 hours. Be careful not to let it cure too long or you might lose too much moisture. After the salmon has cured the trays will be full of a goopy syrupy liquid. That's all the water that's been pulled out of the fish.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dD8puSrGY8I/UkyjkKVTPnI/AAAAAAAAON4/r1ILZ1d9mnU/s1600/IMG_1471.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dD8puSrGY8I/UkyjkKVTPnI/AAAAAAAAON4/r1ILZ1d9mnU/s640/IMG_1471.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next we wash the salmon off and put it out on racks to dry.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SVnAQppUW4A/UkylHFCx6OI/AAAAAAAAOOY/0_pqrNyhyDg/s1600/IMG_1466.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SVnAQppUW4A/UkylHFCx6OI/AAAAAAAAOOY/0_pqrNyhyDg/s640/IMG_1466.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I usually add a fan to add in this. After a couple of hours the pellicle will form. The pellicle is a thin membrane that forms on the surface of the fish and will absorb the smokey flavor, or so I've been told. I got it from Alton Brown on Good Eats. But the salmon will be sticky to the touch when it's ready.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x1EaF5-ZHVA/UkyjkLs0oPI/AAAAAAAAOOI/j-IkIQniPL8/s1600/IMG_1473.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x1EaF5-ZHVA/UkyjkLs0oPI/AAAAAAAAOOI/j-IkIQniPL8/s640/IMG_1473.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next lay out our toppings if you want to smoke the fish with toppings on. I love smoking the salmon with topping on because the toppings take on the smokey flavor as well. I find the jalapenos are super tasty after a good smoke. Other topping I like are garlic, sun dried tomatoes, and, roasted red peppers. I also leave some plain. Later I'll add some sweet chili sauce or Sirachi's hot sauce to the salmon when I vac pack it. I also like to leave a few piece plain just to enjoy as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then they go into the smoker. I have a Little Chief that I literally have turned black from all the smoking I've done in it. I usually go two to three pans of chips or about 8 hours of smoking. I check the fish regularly and move trays around in the smoker, getting some of the bigger pieces closer to the heat if they need it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B_mLhwd8E6I/UkyjkGE534I/AAAAAAAAOOM/E1Ee-8AwC6g/s1600/IMG_1472.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B_mLhwd8E6I/UkyjkGE534I/AAAAAAAAOOM/E1Ee-8AwC6g/s640/IMG_1472.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When it's all said and done you get this beautiful deep dark red smoke salmon. I prefer sockeye for smoking, but all species smoke up well and so does trout and halibut. After I let the salmon cool for an hour or two I usually vac pack most of my batch. Especially if I know I'm not going to eat it for awhile. The vac packing also helps to let the meat really soak in the flavors you've added. It'll keep in the fridge for weeks and the freezer for months.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q3sJmdgrNPs/UkypWT7_DcI/AAAAAAAAOOg/u8g6X_dq80g/s1600/IMG_1475.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q3sJmdgrNPs/UkypWT7_DcI/AAAAAAAAOOg/u8g6X_dq80g/s640/IMG_1475.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And there you go Nunaka Valley Farms secret smoke salmon recipe. Not really all that hard and you can always tweak recipe. Some people love to add spices to their cure and rubs. I recommend trying and trying and trying till you find something that's just right. Because to be honest if your careful not to over salt the fish it's really hard to mess up. </div>

Well life on the farm is slowing down. The last two weeks have been a flurry of activity with trying to finish the insulating of my foundation and reaping the crops.<br />
<br />
The girls have been helping out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FBdyOLVUCak/UkSE6LtCLaI/AAAAAAAAOL8/mgVJci6qi40/s1600/IMG_1438.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="472" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FBdyOLVUCak/UkSE6LtCLaI/AAAAAAAAOL8/mgVJci6qi40/s640/IMG_1438.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I didn't take too many pictures of the harvest or the clean up, but we had a nice harvest of carrots, potatoes, green beans, beats, turnips, parsnips, peas, zucchini, various squashes, kale, salad greens and surprisingly tomatoes this year. The disappointments were our cucumbers, onions, and lemon squash.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RobgCh4TDOw/UkSE6E_Y-oI/AAAAAAAAOMQ/WEAj7ksBzO0/s1600/IMG_1439.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RobgCh4TDOw/UkSE6E_Y-oI/AAAAAAAAOMQ/WEAj7ksBzO0/s640/IMG_1439.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think we ended up with close to 50 pounds of taters this year. We have a variety of Yukon golds, reds, fingerlings and some purples (not in picture).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think having the cucumbers in the greenhouse is what did them in since it was so hot and sunny this summer, I think they couldn't take the heat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hCHHYvGOWg8/UkSE5nLwtOI/AAAAAAAAOMI/f-KNh2CxhlU/s1600/IMG_1468.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="410" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hCHHYvGOWg8/UkSE5nLwtOI/AAAAAAAAOMI/f-KNh2CxhlU/s640/IMG_1468.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We only managed to get 19 sockeye salmon dipnetting this year, but last year we filled our card and still have a ton of fish left over. Here is a double batch of smoked sockeye we made up to eat, send to family and take to parties. The jalapeno is my favorite, we also add some sweet chili sauce and Sirachi sauce to a few few piece when we vac pack it to add some more variety to the plain. We also have sun dried tomato and garlic in the picture. I like to smoke the fish with the toppings on so that they get some of the smokey flavor as well. It works really well with the Jalapeno and if you vac pack it after it's done and let it sit in the fridge for a few days the meat really absorbs the flavor. I also scored quite a bit of halibut from a friend this summer and with all the harvest from the yard the freezer is full. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After all the work we've put into the house and garden the last two weeks I think it's time for a nap.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FDviUIOfj_c/UkSE6RzVvVI/AAAAAAAAOMU/8LShRKMcvY8/s1600/IMG_1469.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FDviUIOfj_c/UkSE6RzVvVI/AAAAAAAAOMU/8LShRKMcvY8/s640/IMG_1469.jpg" width="520" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Curly agrees.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PyjO9cvS6hU/Uf1A-_0rS3I/AAAAAAAANy4/PhTGI8HVKK8/s640/blogger-image-202028561.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PyjO9cvS6hU/Uf1A-_0rS3I/AAAAAAAANy4/PhTGI8HVKK8/s640/blogger-image-202028561.jpg" /></a></div>

Works been keeping my busy and I had taken a few photos a few weeks ago and never got around to publishing them. <br />
<br />
So on my short break from work Christa and I managed to make it down to get some sockeye salmon and I scored some halibut from a friend in Petersburg. So the freezer is full of fish protein. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-yoE_EFANERI/UeyiAWyvH1I/AAAAAAAANuQ/Cwe4yJJlGVY/s640/blogger-image-2088498122.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-yoE_EFANERI/UeyiAWyvH1I/AAAAAAAANuQ/Cwe4yJJlGVY/s640/blogger-image-2088498122.jpg" /></a></div>
In bed #1 the onions and peas are doing pretty good. If we manage to keep the chickens and cats out of the bed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-0dft8rOSAYw/UeyiMeIWtlI/AAAAAAAANuo/tR-JlGvo-08/s640/blogger-image--594527159.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-0dft8rOSAYw/UeyiMeIWtlI/AAAAAAAANuo/tR-JlGvo-08/s640/blogger-image--594527159.jpg" /></a></div>
Bed #2 is doing pretty outstanding, Carrots, beats and peas all going crazy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4ZeirpmB5Zg/UeyiIS5hcUI/AAAAAAAANug/7lYTGAULvRs/s640/blogger-image--1560115536.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4ZeirpmB5Zg/UeyiIS5hcUI/AAAAAAAANug/7lYTGAULvRs/s640/blogger-image--1560115536.jpg" /></a></div>
Bed 3 has the lettuce mix, turnips, and a buch of other stuff all doing really well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ko7cfH5hZ_Q/Ue21GBlpFNI/AAAAAAAANvA/lPovxQd9olI/s640/blogger-image--1636297275.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ko7cfH5hZ_Q/Ue21GBlpFNI/AAAAAAAANvA/lPovxQd9olI/s640/blogger-image--1636297275.jpg" /></a></div>
Potatoes are already flowering.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ail71O6P-u4/Ue21EB7ANDI/AAAAAAAANu4/rXdaa-KWdgo/s640/blogger-image-1273869568.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ail71O6P-u4/Ue21EB7ANDI/AAAAAAAANu4/rXdaa-KWdgo/s640/blogger-image-1273869568.jpg" /></a></div>
In the greenhouse everything is going gangbusters with all the sun and heat we've been having. Our tomatoe corner has been pumping out some nice sized tomatoes. That's a first for me as our tomatoes never seem to do very good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-GgU3qDFFFa0/Ue21QBaof0I/AAAAAAAANvw/5YHd05y1iTA/s640/blogger-image-2048614392.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-GgU3qDFFFa0/Ue21QBaof0I/AAAAAAAANvw/5YHd05y1iTA/s640/blogger-image-2048614392.jpg" /></a></div>
Our medley of 3 kinds of long beans. We've been eating on these guys for a while now.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Ki1i5HE2sxw/Ue21OTYpDDI/AAAAAAAANvo/NW25j0bBk08/s640/blogger-image-229862386.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Ki1i5HE2sxw/Ue21OTYpDDI/AAAAAAAANvo/NW25j0bBk08/s640/blogger-image-229862386.jpg" /></a></div>
And our cucumbers have been flowering for awhile, but I just now noticed a few female flowers starting to open.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-q_ibnVkREdI/Ue21LGmWcEI/AAAAAAAANvY/d9WiqTXG9YA/s640/blogger-image--1934090834.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-q_ibnVkREdI/Ue21LGmWcEI/AAAAAAAANvY/d9WiqTXG9YA/s640/blogger-image--1934090834.jpg" /></a></div>

Lets take a walk around the farm.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-j8uCYobeuYM/UdEEBs_EDkI/AAAAAAAANso/cZlr_2lE2Eo/s640/blogger-image--354379614.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-j8uCYobeuYM/UdEEBs_EDkI/AAAAAAAANso/cZlr_2lE2Eo/s640/blogger-image--354379614.jpg" /></a></div>
The zuch beds are doing good, the cabbage in the other bed not so much. Christa thinks we have a vole problem.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hcI-u6L0TA4/UdED8bApx6I/AAAAAAAANsQ/fFELS1YcV2s/s640/blogger-image--670580154.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hcI-u6L0TA4/UdED8bApx6I/AAAAAAAANsQ/fFELS1YcV2s/s640/blogger-image--670580154.jpg" /></a><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Br-Q4bqKcD8/UdED_2aNFjI/AAAAAAAANsg/epk5bGay9ac/s640/blogger-image--1828417804.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Br-Q4bqKcD8/UdED_2aNFjI/AAAAAAAANsg/epk5bGay9ac/s640/blogger-image--1828417804.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Raspberries are coming along nicely. Might not have as much yield as last year, but we still have a ton of berries in the freezer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vcaJQiZhv8U/UdEEOoBXJeI/AAAAAAAANtg/5WnceOCS1AY/s640/blogger-image--827814360.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vcaJQiZhv8U/UdEEOoBXJeI/AAAAAAAANtg/5WnceOCS1AY/s640/blogger-image--827814360.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Taters are starting to leaf up nicely too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4kWV_P6Nc2s/UdEEI0KL6VI/AAAAAAAANtI/gHkIwqnOZnA/s640/blogger-image--519524485.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4kWV_P6Nc2s/UdEEI0KL6VI/AAAAAAAANtI/gHkIwqnOZnA/s640/blogger-image--519524485.jpg" /></a></div>
Green beans are coming in nicely too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-yt5lU5CDKlo/UdEEFaJqN9I/AAAAAAAANs4/Pga1HLatztA/s640/blogger-image-1581958789.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-yt5lU5CDKlo/UdEEFaJqN9I/AAAAAAAANs4/Pga1HLatztA/s640/blogger-image-1581958789.jpg" /></a></div>
Cuchs are coming along nice as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

Nice shot of the green beans and wax beans<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SGrnQPv2qzU/UdEEMq3yUaI/AAAAAAAANtY/AZY5VuwGtyY/s640/blogger-image-721481230.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SGrnQPv2qzU/UdEEMq3yUaI/AAAAAAAANtY/AZY5VuwGtyY/s640/blogger-image-721481230.jpg" /></a></div>
Our few tomato plants are doing really well and we already have some nice fruit coming in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-TBxD1UjFK0k/UdED-dNK_rI/AAAAAAAANsY/KlykRj0mgaQ/s640/blogger-image-1464291336.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-TBxD1UjFK0k/UdED-dNK_rI/AAAAAAAANsY/KlykRj0mgaQ/s640/blogger-image-1464291336.jpg" /></a></div>

And lastly the onion bed with our other pea fence. Started to do some serious thinning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We've already had a round of radishes come in and have been eating on the lettuce for a while now. I have to say the last two summers up here in Alaska have been less than stellar, but this year we've had some great growing weather. Until next time...</div>

Record temperatures and sunny skies have been great to all our crops this spring. <br />
I cleaned out my composter with a batch ready to go and no where to put it so I put a bunch in the raspberry bed and mounded the rest in the back, which the chickens had a lot of fun digging through.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bIQZwdDnff8/UcfoHnUC9nI/AAAAAAAANp8/JZ1Ck71XMQs/s1600/IMG_1208.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bIQZwdDnff8/UcfoHnUC9nI/AAAAAAAANp8/JZ1Ck71XMQs/s640/IMG_1208.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tFNFG01Q8ZQ/UcfoKZMoJ8I/AAAAAAAANqE/00G4XJMpSa8/s1600/IMG_1221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tFNFG01Q8ZQ/UcfoKZMoJ8I/AAAAAAAANqE/00G4XJMpSa8/s640/IMG_1221.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
Also pulled the first crop. These French breakfast radishes are pretty delicious and like most radishes grow like weeds.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JlWv2wJEj-M/UcfomHQCWFI/AAAAAAAANrE/OZvDrFafAI4/s1600/IMG_1229.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JlWv2wJEj-M/UcfomHQCWFI/AAAAAAAANrE/OZvDrFafAI4/s640/IMG_1229.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Got a few tomatoes coming in already.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EINc25HSvnI/UcfogQ2nTiI/AAAAAAAANq8/oM27QXe-HYs/s1600/IMG_1228.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EINc25HSvnI/UcfogQ2nTiI/AAAAAAAANq8/oM27QXe-HYs/s640/IMG_1228.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

Alright I'm off, but we'll have an update here in a week or so.cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9160393366045097105.post-67911537248013450802013-06-16T21:30:00.001-07:002013-06-16T21:30:37.085-07:00June 16th, 2013Well things here on the farm are coming together. Christa has taken the lead in almost everything as I've been in and out of town for work and will be till the end of August. But even though we had a late winter, we've had some of the most gorgous weather the last month. 80's in Anchorage is pretty rare and we've had quite a few in a row now. While my poor Alaska acclamated body is not enjoying the heat and all that sun the plants and chickens sure are. Lets have a look around the farm!<br />

Here's a look at the new coop in its permanent location. I just made that front side so it can open up and it's easier to get at the water bucket and to clean up the run.<br />
